FMP Project Proposal

Rationale

As the entertainment industry has grown in every medium, it has become apparent that we can easily recognize substandard 3D models of people, it is easy to pick out if a person does not move naturally or is sized disproportionately. This can often be caused by a modeler not considering the range of movement a character should have, this triggers an uncanny valley sensation in audiences and instantly ruins their immersion in the media.

This study is intended to provide perspective and insight into the requirements for building a person from scratch in a 3D environment, to accomplish this I will be researching various anatomic representations in different forms and using these to create an anatomically correct 3D model of a person.

I also intend to study and use digital sculpting platforms such as ZBrush to research, practise and ultimately create a 3D model of a person.

The knowledge gained in this endeavor will be useful at all levels of study and provide a valuable basis for real world application, such as modeling people for games and other media that are of a high enough standard as to not ruin the immersion.

Concept

To better improve my knowledge of the human form I will be researching various anatomic representations of the human body, starting with simple life drawings of different muscle groups, and moving upwards to more difficult research subjects such as medical diagrams of musculature.

I will also look at more artistic representations of the human body such as renaissance sculptures and paintings, these research materials will for a basis to do more advanced drawings or digital recreations.

I will also be researching and using digital sculpting programs such as ZBrush for the first time as this is the industry standard tool for this kind of work, I will need to familiarize myself with the program and use said program to recreate some of my research.

Finally, I intend to use my research to design and create a 3D model of an anatomically correct human. The models i create will then be posed and rendered to create artistic prints that can be exhibited in my online portfolios and website.

Evaluation

I plan to keep a journal of drawings and notes that will digitised at the end of the project, this will then be uploaded as content onto my website. This journal will contain my starting point and the pathway I have undertaken to my final design, any changes in my plan and research methods as well as any issues I face will also be documented.

As this project is primarily solitary, I will venture to self-assess my progress at different stages by reflecting on my research and comparing it against my current skill level.

The main issue I will face is doing the research over a number of weeks as I generally don’t stop working on a project until it is finished, to combat this I will try to group different research areas into different weeks and set a goal for each week to complete.
